70% of firms fail to measure business impact of training

More than two-thirds of organisations have no formal measurement practices to assess the impact of training on their business performance, according to a new study.

The survey of training managers by IT Training and e-learning providers’ network Global Learning Alliance, found that just 30% of companies measured the impact of training on business performance.

It also found that the majority of companies used only end-of-course surveys that measure delegate satisfaction.

Rob Clarke, Marketing Director, said: Global Learning Alliance: “In the past 12 months a tidal wave of information has been generated on the need and power of learning analytics, yet today as few as 30% of organisations actually have a system in place to assess the impact of training on their business results.”

He continued: “Fewer still are considering the financial payback on training investments despite the demands of stakeholders for their training teams to provide measurements that show something about the actual value being delivered.”

Key findings:
– 30% measure impact of training on business performance
– 50% evaluate impact of training on job performance
– 62% compare their learning analytics results with external benchmarks
– Most companies only use end-of-course surveys.

The study, Learning Analytics Best Practices Survey 2004, involved training managers from 100 organisations in 10 countries worldwide.
