‘Green’ career boom grips environmental generation

pp_default1

A green career is the new growth area with 35,000 predicted to work in environmentally-friendly industries by 2020.

The figures released by the Department of Trade and Industry reveal a niche growth area that looks set to spiral over the next decade.

The mood is being sparked by younger workers, with one in ten aged 18-24 saying they are ashamed at the lack of green credentials held by their employer.

As many as 80 per cent of this group want to change this and are actively taking practical steps to make their workplace more environmentally friendly.

For example, 49 per cent are now switching off appliances, 40 per cent are recycling and 11 per cent are using more energy efficient light bulbs.

This is according to Jobsite.co.uk who is reacting to the trend by launching a jobs board dedicated to green jobs. In good news for ‘green’ candidates, putting the environment first doesn’t mean salary is compromised. Salary ranges, says Jobsite, scale from £18k to £100k.

Felix Wetzel, Jobsite’s group marketing director, commented: “Green jobs may be to the 2010s what IT was to the 1990s. Recruiters need to tap into this social change if they are to continue to pull in candidates, and companies, and deliver first rate results.”
