Audio books on CD have been with us for more than ten years. This method is not as popular as one might think. Although they are cheaper and more convenient than their predecessors (audio books on cassettes) they are still as common or as uncommon as the cassettes used to be.
Because the audio book is most often associated with leisure reading, they may not be on our radar when seeking out business related information and resources. For this very fact, encountering an audio book such as Internal Communications – From Information to Inspiration comes as a bit of a surprise.
With a total running time of approximately 58 minutes, and six topics to cover, listeners are only exposed to a brief snippet of information – good, solid, useful and interesting information.
Richard Mosley, Managing Director People in Business, has done a good job in the selection of topic and contributors. Internal communications has become a “hot topic” for individuals and organisations on the look out for better information, better ideas, and tangible useful resources. The limited time frame of this offering is the only thing that works against its effectiveness. None the less, Mosley provides transition between speakers and topics with ease and clarity – resulting in an enjoyable listen.
Contributors Darren Briggs (Vodafone), Andraea Dawson-Sheppard (Cadbury Schweppes), Colette Downward (consultant), Tom Harvey (Nationwide) and Tim Small (Compass Group) share their experiences and insight into the power of internal communications. These experiences are real life, personal and effective in providing the listener with an idea of how effective and dynamic internal communication impacts the daily lives and corporate health of the contributors’ workplaces. Like a book described as a “quick read” this audio offering is a “quick listen”, and left me wanting to hear more of what each of the contributors had to say and share on this topic.
From Information to Inspiration would be a useful primer for those starting to explore the dynamics of internal communication or those looking for a starting point in working to improve the effectiveness of communication in their workplace. Overall, a good offering and a resource that you might just want to consider adding to your audio library.
