Christians Against Poverty (CAP) has been named the UK’s best small company to work for by the Sunday Times.
The Bradford-based debt counselling service provides a lifeline for thousands of people caught in the debt trap and beat 99 other small firm hopefuls to the prize.
Inspired leadership is part of CAP’s success, according to the paper. John Kirkby oversees the charity’s work in Australia and New Zealand and Matt Barlow, chief executive manages the Bradford head office and the 68 church-based centres in the UK. Staff are so inspired by the pair they awarded them a top and near perfect score of 98% whilst Matt Barlow received the prestigious Best Leader Award.
CAP also scored highest for engagement with company principles, 98% of staff said they are proud to work for the charity. Staff said stress isn’t a problem either, giving an 83% score and said they are happy with the balance between work and home life (87%). Workers at CAP love working there so much, 80% said they had the dream job.
Barlow said: “Words can’t describe how happy we are to receive this award. So often Christian organisations are seen as either amateurish or out of touch with the real world, so we’re pleased to challenge those perceptions.”
The charity came top in 34 of the 66 questions posed in the newspaper’s employee questionnaire. Small- and medium-sized businesses were judged on factors including leadership, management and personal growth.
