Jaguar workers are being balloted over strike action over the owner Ford’s decision to end production at the Browns Lane plant.
On Saturday, 5000 people, including Jaguar workers from Browns Lane and other plants, their families and supporters marched through Coventry in protest at the planned closures, which threaten over 1000 jobs. Many demonstrators were workers at other car plants, including Peugeot and Vauxhall factories.
Jaguar apparently denies claims that the company is to close all production in Coventry. Unions are demanding alternatives to mass redundancies and the plant’s closure.
On Saturday Tony Woodley, T&G General Secretary, said: “We call on not just Jaguar workers but also the wider community of Coventry and the West Midlands to stand together and fight this unjust closure. If Ford are allowed to get away with shutting Browns Lane we have real concerns about the future of hundreds of other jobs, and about future jobs for our kids and the community. We urge every person in Coventry to show their support for Jaguar workers by joining us on Saturday. Ford have acted outrageously – let’s make them think again.”
The ballot, which closes on December 13, asks workers whether or not industrial action should be taken.
