Ray Owen is seeking to appeal against his sacking from the post of rector of the parish of Hanley. The trouble is, Church of England clergy are designated as employed by God, and only as holders of office within the church. This leaves them without the same rights to tribunals as other employees.
Mr Owen is taking his case to the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee, on the grounds that these employment conditions are discriminatory.

For Heaven’s Sake!
Poor Ray Owen, the rector of the parish of Hanley who is seeking to appeal against his sacking. How in this day and age can we come to such a fatuous conclusion that he is “employed by God”? How far removed from the reality of everyday life is some of our employment law?
