The Institute of Management (IM) has been granted a Royal Charter of Incorporation and from 1 April 2002 will become the Chartered Management Institute. The grant of a Royal Charter recognises the Institute’s work in supporting the lifelong development of managers and raising standards of management performance.
In welcoming the award, the Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, said: “It is an important recognition of the vital need for the UK to be led by world-class and professional managers. Better managers and leaders will ultimately improve the productivity of all organisations contributing to our national competitiveness and the effective delivery of the public services.”
Current members of the IM will automatically become members of the Chartered Management Institute on 1 April. And this year the first cohort of managers will be able to take steps towards becoming Chartered Managers, based on qualification, currency of experience, professional practice and evidence of on-going learning and skills development.
“This is a significant moment for the Institute, but more importantly it recognises management as a valued profession in its own right,” said Mary Chapman, director general of the new Chartered Management Institute. “Good management makes a vital contribution to business success. The need for people with excellent management and leadership skills is vital across organisations in all sectors. The creation of the new Chartered Management Institute endorses the professional standing of management and opens up exciting opportunities for the future.”
