A dedicated third sector social network to connect volunteers to charities, each other and local projects has just been unveiled.
Ivo is a follow-on to an 18-month pilot project entitled i-volunteer, which was set up to more effectively connect “people and organisations who want to change their world”.
The site’s founder and chief executive, Jamie Ward-Smith, said: “Volunteering, social action, community involvement – whatever you choose to call it, it’s essentially about changing things for the better. And all the evidence says that the best way get people involved is through personal networks and contacts.”
He added: “Networks like Facebook et al are great, but they are jammed with adverts and seem, ultimately, to be about making money. I’d like to think that ivo embraces the true spirit on the web, which is about bringing people together to connect, share and learn.”
To “celebrate its launch,” the site is giving away £1,000 in a competition to fund events that bring people together to change something in their community. The winners will be announced in the forthcoming Volunteers’ Week 2012 on 1 to 7 June.

I think this is another example of the power that social media has to connect people and organisations together. In this particular case, it has allowed for more volunteers to be recruited for charities. Facebook is becoming increasingly commercialised so I’m sure that the ivo site will be successful in using the premise of social netoworking to benefit charities in finding volunteers and sharing information.
