HR Tip: Foster parents and flexible working

Foster parents have the same flexible working rights as biological parents if they have six months of service and exercise parental responsibility. This includes natural parents, guardians, and adopters seeking to balance work with childcare duties.

These questions are being answered by Learn HR, a market leader in the provision of HR and payroll training and nationally-recognised professional qualifications.

Q: “A woman has requested flexible working hours to enable her to look after a three year old child. However she is only the foster mother. Does she have any entitlement?”

A:  Yes. If she has six months service she has the same rights as a biological mother. The right is available to people who will exercise parental responsibility such as natural parents, foster parents, guardians or adopters.
