Hello everyone,

My step daughter recently accepted a fixed term contract with a large, well known organisation in the UK. Her line manager discussed future plans with her and how he saw her fitting into those plans and asked on four seperate occassions whether she would stay if a permanent job was offered.

With one month left to run on the contract the line manager cancelled there regular 1:1. He was then on holiday for two weeks. He was based in London, she was in Leeds and they usually meet on twice a month.

On his return from holiday they arranged the next 1:1. This was now the last week of the fixed term contract. At this meeting my step daughter was expecting the be offered a permanent post, there were no issues with her performance.

At the meeting the line manager informed her that his plans had changed and he no longer saw a role for her.

I’m not CIPD qualified but do work in HR so know a bit about it. She wasn’t invited to a meeting to discuss the end of the contract and wasn’t given the one month notice period.

She only had 6 months service so I think you will tell me there is nothing she can do but she is really upset about this and feels she wants to make a point with them if there is one to make.

Any advice would be appreciated.
