Help – Sickness and returning to work

I am hoping someone here can help me.

My husband is at the moment off work due to sickness. He has been to his doctor and was given a sick note. He returned to the doctor after 3 weeks (for which the sick note lasted) and was signed off for another 2 weeks.

Now he is getting harassed by his works to go back even though he is not fit to do so. His job can be very physical and at present he is unable to even drive a car.

My question is if you have a sick note from your GP can you be made to return to work?

Any help or advice will be gratefully accepted.
