My mum works for a care home that had recently started a punishment scheme where you would be deducted 20p per hour for all the time you were off sick. eg, if she had one day off sick, she would lose 20p per hour for every hour she worked that month. This happened for two months, she had four days off in total. The scheme was stopped after that because if she deducted money from the lower paid staff it would take them below the minimum wage. My mum was not one of these lower paid staff so she was never taken below the minimum wage but is she entitled to any of this money back? She never agreed to this scheme or signed anything to say she accepted the terms of it. It was basically told to her by the manager once the money had already been taken deducted.
