How do I progress with Charity Status

I am the Director of a non charity organisation working in the field of Oceanic Mammal Conservation and Survey.

I have no experience of taking such an organisation into a Charitable Staus and would be grateful to receive advice as to where to start and any pitfalls that I might encounter.
