1) Can you have a policy of not allowing non-parents to take holiday during school breaks? I would have thought this would get you slammed for discrimination in no time – plus, what if someone who isn’t a parent has a partner/best friend/family who is a teacher?

2) Can you give preference to parents having holiday in school breaks, or is it necessary to have a first-come-first-served basis?

3) If a particular department has a defined busy season – eg, flat out during the last two weeks of October – can we have a policy that those working in that department cannot take leave during the busy season except for exceptional circumstances? (funerals, for instance)
