And I don’t mean what theory have you learnt – but what have you learnt about yourself, other people or life in general? And what difference will that learning have on what actions you take or how you behave tomorrow?

This was a question that was drummed into us at our trainer training as a key question to ask participants during, at the end and after any training. It’s certainly something I apply to my daily life. I also realise that’s why my blogs and tweets can be quite diverse. I’m continually tracking to see how specific events can be applied to mine and your lives e.g. How can we learn from the seagull crèche next door as the last remaining seagull is encouraged to fly, can I use the fact that the smell of sweet peas in my office reminds me of happy times with my grandfather for learning for us all etc.

Two TV programmes this week had me enthused for the same reason. Paul from Undercover Boss said he learnt a lot about himself as a result of taking part and that he needed to reflect on his life balance (I refuse to call it work/life balance) and the impact that has on his family. Noel Fitzpatrick, the Bionic Vet, sat on the floor at 2 in the morning shattered saying “I just want to sleep in my own bed” having slept in the bed in his office for too many nights in a row. My personal hope is that both Paul and Noel ensure that the learning they had is reflected in changes they make in their lives.

Remember the question comes in two parts: what did you learn and, what will you do differently. I’d also add and when will you start.
