It’s award season across the globe over the coming weeks – from the Grammy’s to the Oscars and the Brits to the Baftas. Actors and Artists from all over the globe will be gathering to see whether their nominations will win them a sought after award. After all, it is their job. They are paid to perform and entertain the public and, like the rest of us, they appreciate a little employee recognition too.

It’s not just the winning that counts, to be nominated for an Oscar or a Grammy is plenty recognition enough for some – just the fact that their performance is perceived good enough to even be considered makes them feel truly appreciated.

From the red carpet to the office desks, recognition works in the same way. Employees like to be recognised for what they do, whether it’s a simple thank you from a colleague, or a nomination that could win them a prize – people need to know that their efforts have been noticed. Once noticed, staff will want to stand out again and again, which will lead to a more productive and engaged workforce.

Case Study: Aviva

A good example of a well received employee recognition programme is the Aviva Spotlight programme.

Aviva wanted to build a culture of peer to peer recognition and empower staff to nominate and reward their colleagues for work they felt helped contribute to the success of the company. It was time to concentrate on engaging employees and generating a positive attitude throughout the organisation. Aviva identified reward as a fundamental method in bringing this re-brand to life for employees.

An online portal was created titled ‘Spotlight’, which allows employees to nominate an individual or team for a job well done, with successful nominations leading to the nominee receiving a reward to the value determined by the nominator and recognition across the company. Employees could choose to spend their reward points on over 800 items, including vouchers available across over 40 retailers.

Since the implementation of the programme Aviva have continually received positive feedback throughout their temperature check surveys, which revealed that 22% of employees feel more recognised post the Spotlight programme launch. A recent online employee satisfaction survey also showed over 90% satisfaction with the scheme and nominations experience.

So who will win best film at the Oscars this year, Les Misérables?  Life of Pi?  Will Lady GaGa beat Beyonce to a Grammy? Either way, being recognised for what you do can only be a good thing, resulting in increased motivationand engagement, no matter what your profession.
