The Rolling Stones are returning to Hyde Park this July, headlining the already-sold-out British Summer Time concert. This is the first time back to the park since their legendary free concert for an estimated 250,000 people in 1969, and the ageing group of rockers have expressed their excitement about getting back on stage. Their return is highly anticipated by fans of all ages, demonstrating that the Rolling Stones have reached the far corners of every generation since they have started making music together. The frenzy surrounding their return proves, as they say, the Stones have still got it.
The popularity of this group some 51 years after its formation has one wondering if age really matters in the journey to fulfilling, and maintaining ambitions. Sure, you might say that they were young and ambitious at one time which helped the band to succeed at the outset. But what if they had waited for the “right time” to play music due to their young age? Been uncertain of releasing an album? Let some other iconic group achieve the popularity they have now? Grown old with thoughts of what-if and should-have -done instead of we did?
Mark Zuckerburg, Facebook co-founder, left Harvard to develop his social networking site that he developed in his dorm room and is now one of the world’s youngest billionaires. Sarah Attar from Saudi Arabia was the first woman from her country to compete in the Olympics this year, managing to chase her own dream as well as help create dreams for every woman who was inspired by her. Ranulph Fiennes, adventurer and holder of several endurance records, pushed the envelope once more and at age 65 climbed to the summit of Mount Everest. These are all examples of people who have blazed a trail and lived their dreams and beyond.
Dreams and ambitions don’t play by the rules. They don’t quit once you reach (or haven’t reached) a certain age; there is no window of opportunity that passes by, never to be repeated. They are always there, just waiting for you to seize them. Young or old, everyone most likely has things on the backburner, simply waiting for the one day there are no more excuses as to why they can’t do it. Age, money, time, other obligations can all stand in the way of possibility; now, it’s time to turn that dream into reality. What are you waiting for?
Lisa Coggan has recently joined our Manchester office as Recruitment Team Assistant and sadly missed out on getting tickets to the Rolling Stones.
