Appraisals… love them or hate them?
We know. Appraisals aren’t everyone’s favourite thing to do. However, we also know that when run properly they can be really positive and leave you feeling like your colleagues value the work you do.
Obviously, the Carbon360 team love appraisals. However, that doesn’t mean that we haven’t had the occasional bad experience too.
As its Valentine’s Day the team decided to share some of their appraisal experiences about what they love – and what they hate!
We would love to hear yours too…
Share your best/worst appraisal experience with us in the comments box below.
The team will pick their favourite on Feb 20th and send the lucky winner a Carbon360 mug and some choccies – just because it’s Valentine’s Day and we want to share the love!

Loves it!
My favourite appraisal experience was being left a comment by one of my co-workers saying that if I was in the circus I would be a plate spinner! Although it was a pretty daft comment, I often feel (as I’m sure many people in HR do) that I’m trying to do a million things at once, while always smiling and trying to look calm. It was really nice to know that people notice your efforts, even if they don’t have time to tell you day to day.

Love it!
My favourite thing about appraisals is using the feedback to structure PDP’s for the coming year. Planning goals and learning new skills really motivates the Carbon360 team. They always get fresh excitement and enthusiasm about their role, no matter how long they have been here. It’s really nice to see and it makes me excited about the year to come.

Hate it!
I have worked in companies where they just don’t use appraisal feedback properly. You spend time filling in forms, but they don’t do anything with the information afterwards. There was just one day a year where we all turned up to a meeting, looked at our scores, and that was the end of it. They never even explained to us what the scores meant.

Love it!
As MD, I have to give a lot of employee feedback. I really enjoy it. Although there are obviously issues raised, generally the feedback is really positive. Its great being able to tell staff how much the company appreciates their effort. It’s also one of the few opportunities I get to hear what the staff think of me. As it’s anonymous, they can be really honest – they are very complimentary most of the time! Also, appraisals are a brilliant way to get a companywide view of where our strengths and weaknesses lie in order to put together an effective business plan.
The Carbon360 team have lots of good advice about how you can make sure your appraisals run smoothly, using your feedback to set meaningful goals, and how to approach appraisals in a way that employees won’t hate. Just get in touch!
