Last week, my mother was laid off after 5 and a half years working as a part-time shop assistant, apparently due to poor sales at the shop.

She was given a week’s notice, with no offer of redundancy. Her contract states that if her employer wants to terminate her employment with them, the notice they must give, if the period of continuous employment is more than two years, but less than twelve years (which it is), is one week’s notice for each complete year of continuous employment.

What’s more, her boss didn’t even have the courtesy to tell her in person – instead her boss gave a badly-worded letter to the manageress to give to her.

Is she entitled to more notice, and, more importantly, to any redundancy pay?

Thanks
