My partner has been coping with depression for the past 9 months. More recently, alcohol has also become a problem. Recently she was found at work to be intoxicated, and was suspended. There was no damage, abuse, or violence – just lots of tears. She’s in a non-clinical, non-patient contact role in the NHS.
She admitted it fully, and can demonstrate that she’s taking all the right steps to address her problem, worsened in part by some atrocious counselling shortly beforehand, for which she got an official apology. She has had no negative feedback about her work performance, attendance or conduct before this, in the NHS or any previous job.
Needless to say the episode has worsened her depression and her GP has offered to sign her off, but she wants to face the disciplinary get it over with. My guess is she’s unlikely to be dismissed, but get a final written warning – anyone care to speculate otherwise ?
Might it help her case to take the sick leave and demonstrate that she has mended her ways before facing a hearing ?
All thoughts welcome. Thanks.
