I started work for a new employer just before Christmas as a Business Development Consultant. This entails a lot of client management and subsequently travel. Currently driving a gas guzzling 4*4 and estimating 35,000 miles p.a. this is an untenable solution.

I have approached my employer, who is delighted with my work to date, and enquired as to the possibility of him providing a car allownace, on top of the mileaghe rates i receive. This will allow me to change to a much more cost effective and environmentally friendly diesel car.

Do you think this is a reasonable request and if so, what are the mechanics of such a scheme and what impact if any will there be on me and my employer?
