I’ve been a Project Manager with the same company for nearly 2.5 years, gradully getting bigger projects to run. Last Autumn I was given a substantially bigger project to run (after much to-ing & fro-ing about whether I would or not!) being told that a new senior manager due to start would give me additional support to grow into the role & (verbally) that I would have a 6 month probationary period in the role.

The new senior manager has now started (about a month ago) and the probation period was brought up again, saying it would be extended as he wasn’t in a position to make a judgement on my performance.

Last Friday afternoon I’m called in & told that they’ve realised that the role is too big for one person (which I agree with) and that it’s going to be split into 2 – and I’m going to be doing the junior role. They had no details to offer me at the time, but since have sent me an email with some points for a job description, including doing admin!

I’m meeting with them again this Friday to discuss this further, but even though my salary won’t change I feel this is a demotion as I will have less responsibility and status within the organisation.

Added to this, some Project Manager posts were recently advertised at £5ooo more than I’m currently getting paid – I didn’t raise it at the time as I was on probation & figured I’d raise it when I passed (which I was confident of doing as no issues had been raised by me)

To add insult to injury, the senior managers who met with me said it wasn’t a reflection of my performance in the role & that I’ve done well!

Sorry for rambling on so long, I really feel like I don’t have a long term position with the company that I’ve been with for over 4 years, and even though I’m extremely unmotivated that any minor error will be used against me 🙁
