Fixed Term Contracts

Please could anyone clarify for me a point regarding fixed term contracts.
There is an employee who is employed on a fixed term contract, which keeps being renewed every 12 – 18 months.
This has been going on now for almost 3 years.
Is there a time limit which an employee can be employed on a fixed term contract before they are automatically entitled to become a perm employee?
