we currently run a standby rota for a local water company which involves teams and agents to be on call for a period of seven days at a time covering 24 hrs a day . it is has always been explained that this is how it has always been done but i have a few questions to which am am getting conflicting answers too

  1. how many hours can be worked in one continuous shift ?
  2. if the team is already at work then asked to continue into the night what hours can they then work?
  3. if a team are called out what period of rest are they entitled too?
  4. is the rest paid?
  5. what if the rest falls when the teams are not on shift ( i,e weekends or early morning 0200 hrs )?
  6. is there a minimum payment for these extra duties?
