what is the law on returning to work after maternity.

My sister wants to return part time after doing full time.

She has said she would like to work Mon-Weds 9am till 4pm.

She has been for her return to work interview and she has been told that her job has been given to the person who covered her maternity and that she is to take on a new role (which she really doesn’t want to do!) Does she have to take the new role. The person who they have given it to also only does the job part time, so it is not a question of whether the post can be done part time.

Also, they are saying that they want to her to work Mon, Thurs & Fri and are not being very flexible (she had verbal agreement from her boss 3 weeks ago that she could do Mon-Weds, so she went ahead and arranged child-care for those three days (but he has now left and has left nothing in writing!)

I am attending a meeting with her tomorrow and would like to have a bit more info on where she actually legally stands.
