Hello all. Wonder if you can help me here with a situation I have.
A person has started working with us about 5 weeks ago (and is on a probationary period) and he has already been ill for over two week to date. When the candidate was asked question (amongst others) via EMail about his health he categorically advised us in writing that he had no health issues at all. We have since then spoken to a few people who know this person and we are told that he left his last job due to health issues as they recollect but when confronted the employee said this was not true and he left due to reasons other than health.
We are now seriously considering asking the employee to take a medical checkup and we are unsure how to go about it. Could we for eg ask him to bring in a letter from his Doctor at his expense? We are also concerned that as a small business the cost of a health check could be exhorbitant for us and hence we do are concerned about incurring this cost just to find that the employee was indeed ill and should have be honest with us from the outset.
Alternatively, can we just terminate the employment without specifying the grounds?
