You may have read in the news this week what the technology director Colin Eberhardt from Scott Logic has said about new recruits, as the development firm welcomes its biggest ever pool of graduates:-
“We look for talent that we can cross-train. That’s the only way to be successful with the rapid rate of change in the industry.”
He continues, “We’re in a position where every technology company – big or small – is fighting for the same small pool of talent. To succeed, technology companies that accept the need for fine-grained skills must nurture existing staff and adopt an open-minded recruitment strategy that considers applicants who can refine their technical skills through on-the-job training and experience.”
Words of wisdom indeed, and ones we should all bear in mind when going for interviews.
We all know how important good first impressions are, but sometimes it can be all too easy to blow it. In the business world you only get one chance to make a great first impression. Will others see you as meek, ill-mannered and inexperienced or confident, courteous and curious? It’s up to you.
Follow these 5 Top Tips to make a good first impression:-
1.Look sharp
You don’t need the looks of a supermodel to impress professional colleagues. You simply have to be well put together. Make sure your shoes are un-scuffed, your suit or dress is pressed and your jewellery and accessories are members of the same family.
Pay particular attention to your eyebrows, hair, skin and nails, whether you are male or female.
2.Use “Power Words”
Power words are words or phrases that instantly cause your listener to perk up and take notice.
Here’s a few that people love to hear in professional settings: detail oriented, customer driven, high energy, effective, organised, engaged, value-added, customised, no-risk, resilient, results, positive relationships, facilitated, time-saving, can-do, leadership, etc.
3.Be Positive
The very first question you’ll usually get fired at you in any setting, whether it’s in a client meeting or a job interview is “How are you?” Many people blow it so don’t you!
Pause before blurting out a one word reply. People love a real answer but especially if it’s upbeat.
Don’t say, “Fine, except for struggling to park out there.”
Say, “I’m great thanks. It’s been a brilliant day so far.”
4.Prep for it
One of the best ways to make a killer first impression is to ask informed questions demonstrating that you’ve done your homework.
For a job interview, research the company ahead of time. For a networking event, know something about the key players by visiting their social media site or reading their bios online.
If you aren’t sure about whom you’ll meet, come prepared with some industry-specific news that makes a good conversation starter.
5.Don’t be a joker
Workplace humour can be risky, because so many jokes offend. There’s a fine line between funny and bad taste. Don’t cross it! Leave the bawdy joked and nasty barbs to others.
Don’t get into a huff if someone makes a risqué joke. Give him the benefit of the doubt, but don’t add to it by coming back with a sarcastic comment, which will only leave a bitter aftertaste and make you seem spiteful.
