Recognise This! – People are loyal to other people, not corporations.

How often have you heard the truism, “People don’t leave companies, they leave bosses”?

It is a true statement. But let’s look at it from the flip side. Loyalty is not dead – it’s just changed hands. People are not loyal to companies any more, but they are loyal to other people. Think about it. How long have you stayed in a role you might have left many times over because you respected the person you worked for or loved the team you worked with?

The challenge for managers, however, is letting themselves be “known” to their employees – becoming open, genuine and real enough to earn employee loyalty.

That’s the findings of recent research out of BlessingWhite:

“Items such as a ‘great working relationship with one’s manager’ are contingent upon knowing that manager as a person. It quickly reveals (as we would expect) that manager tasks that require strong connection skills become more difficult if the manager has not built that relationship based on being known as a person.”
