The quality of management is one of the most important factors in the success of any company. A manager’s role is to effectively use resources and guide the performance of their team to deliver the business objectives. This is why it was a concern to see the results of our recent poll, which found that 43% of workers think that they are better people managers than their own boss.

Nearly a quarter of those completing the poll said management standards are getting worse. Any companies finding similar trends through workplace surveys need to act decisively.

One problem is that often high-performers are promoted into management positions without the skills, desire or support to manage a team. Therefore companies should invest in better support and training for managers in order to create a high-performing and engaged workforce.

Two other areas widely recognised as key development areas for managers are communication skills and the ability to provide constructive feedback, so this may be a good place to start.

Standing still is not an option for businesses and a focus on improving the quality of management can only help to contribute to sustained business performance, which will be central to the economic recovery.
