A feature of our changing world is that knowledge and service work dominate the economy. Jobs are less routine and more collaborative. The rate of change is accelerating. Adaptability, flexibility, versatility are key in this new workplace.

Jeanne C. Meister and Karie Willyerd examine the how the working world is changing in The 2020 Workplace, How Innovative Companies Attract, Develop, and Keep Tomorrow’s Employees Today pointing out that employers will face a huge challenge: to recruit, develop and motivate employees of all ages and backgrounds amid breakneck change.
Their model says that in 2020, employees will expect five principles to resonate strongly in their workplaces:
•    “Collaboration” – this calls for interwoven work, internally and externally
•    “Authenticity”– core values and transparency demonstrate genuineness
•    “Personalization” – employees want tailor-made career paths
•    “Innovation” – in a changing world, new thinking enables sustainability
•    “Social connection” – no one is an island; the workplace of the future will be based on sharing and community perspectives
For employees this should mean better work-life balance, a more diversified workplace that is inclusive of gender and race and a super-connected world enabling agile and flexible business. More choice, more options leading to more participation and engagement.
