In the House of Commons last Friday, MPs voted 147 to 11 in favour of a Private Member’s Bill proposing that agency workers be given the same rights as permanent staff. If the Bill became law, employers who use temps would have to pay a standardised rate from day one.
A couple of days prior to this, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and KPMG produced a joint survey of more than 1,500 employers, to find out employers’ views on the debate.
The results showed that employers are pretty much divided, with more than one in four employers believing that agency workers should never qualify for the same rights as permanent employees, whilst one in five think that agency workers should be given the same ‘pay and contract of employment’ conditions from the first day of employment with a given employer.
So what do you think? Do you agree with the Bill? Vote now in the poll below, and please feel free to leave any comments at the bottom of this page.
