Over the years, one thing which always intrigued me to find what is the most essential ingredient to achieve personal performance that leads to personal leadership. It has been my constant zest to find what drives people to display a breakthrough performance.
Over the years, I talked to several different leaders, managers and consultants and all of them view performance and leadership from several different angles. Many of them specified confidence as the essential ingredient and few other said it was communication. While some favored smart work and few others said it was the attitude.
When it comes to leadership, one key thing I find is that most of regular professionals and managers doing day-to-day job are already lost in tons of leadership philosophies out there. There are thousand different techniques, methods, guidelines floating around. Did you also ever find that several of the philosophies in the market sometimes do not resonate with your personality completely? Or did you happen to feel that it was something beyond your current job scope and maybe you would need that ‘miraculous’ tips 10 years later and not now?
If you are reading this blog, you must be a working professional. And you may be looking for proven leadership rules or secrets which you can use in simple way, quickly and effectively in your own settings without having to transform yourself into a charismatic CEO level leader. Isn’t it? Irony is that the consultants around the world and management gurus has made leadership look like a complex science than a simpler phenomenon.
I can fairly relate with your feeling odd sometimes that your seniors and managers seem to associated leadership to the attributes either you feel you lack or you feel you have done your part in trying to acquire, but no help. The leadership in work place setting ought to be simple enough to be adopted by anyone. We know the history, several warriors did show leadership without having to get into complex leadership theories.
I just met a guy who does train people how to use LinkedIn to find jobs quickly. This guy is good in what he does. He is specialist and that puts him apart from crowd. Uniqueness in what he does. Isn’t that makes him the leader?
Simpler rule I have found in my research is that leadership all about being the best in what you do. And you just have to be best in doing only that ONE thing – doing it so well that no one in your team, colleagues, peers or friends or people in your business circle can match your level of effectiveness, efficiency, quality, vision and drive. When you continually keep working on this “one” thing over and over, every time doing it better than last time and you invest your heart into it, it becomes your second nature. This is what makes you shine as leader in that “one” thing.
The questions I have been raising over and over in my posts have been “how do you identify that one thing?” I will come back to “Personal Resonance” model in my later blogs to help you correctly identify it.
