In a regular feature, we’re taking a closer look at the working lives of some of HR Zone’s 17,000 membership. This week, Carole Leslie, Director at IT Learning Ltd, gives us an insight into her professional career to date.
What’s your current job role? Organisational development for Learning IT. As Learning IT is an employee owned company I also sit on the Board as an Employee Director.
What did you do before this job? Had a couple of years out working on a dot com start up which was a fantastic experience. As well as people issues, I also got involved in the whole value chain of the company.
Describe your route into HR Studied for Post Grad dip in Personnel Management after University but didn’t really become involved in HR and recruitment until 10 years later!
Did you always want to work in HR? No – first job working in HR on construction site put me right off!
What would you say has been the most significant event in your career to date? Leaving a job where I was comfortable and well paid and secure because the challenge had gone. Never looked back (or only a few times!)
How do you think the role of HR has changed since you began your HR career? Line managers taking on more of an HR role – going to see the HR manager used to mean you were in trouble!
What single thing would improve your working life? More time in the day – and that other people could manage their own time better!

Do you have any advice for those looking to embark on a career in HR? Gain as much general business experience as you can – HR is integral to a company and should not be isolated.
