Employers protest against review of employment legislation

pp_default1

As we recently reported the government has announced a review of the 1999 Employment Relations Act. Employers’ groups are protesting that further legislative changes are unnecessary and undesirable. This is the second time in a month that employers’ organisations have attemtped to stem the tide of further legislative changes.

The CBI responded to the government’s announcement of consultations on the Employment Relations Act, the EU Directive on Information and Consultation and employment status. John Cridland, CBI Deputy Director-General, said: “We welcome the opportunity to debate the health of British employee relations. Our starting point is ‘what is the problem for which these reviews are a solution?’. The labour market is working well with low unemployment and large-scale industrial action a thing of the past, in the private sector at least. There is no case for major regulatory change, but of course more businesses need to adopt practices of the best.”

The Engineering Employers’ Federation has also voiced its concern.
