Employers should “come down hard on bullies”

pp_default1

Premiership soccer ace Andy Cole is setting a good example for employees who feel bullied by their boss, according to employment law experts.

Blackburn Rovers striker Cole complained to the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) that he has been singled out for unfair treatment by boss Graeme Souness. Soccer chiefs are investigating the row.

“From an employers perspective, it is beneficial to ensure that employees are encouraged to bring matters such as this to their attention to help stamp out a culture of bullying in the workplace,” said Fiona Holdsworth at North West law firm Kippax Beaumont Lewis.

“Where employers are seen to come down hard on bullies this will be a good defence in claims for constructive dismissal.”
