Graduate recruitment trends

pp_default1

There is guarded optimism over graduate vacancies – with the outlook in some sectors rosier than last year, according to the Graduate Trends Survey 2003/4, by graduate careers publishers GTI.

The study of 500 companies found that in most sectors, students responded to a challenging market by delaying their applications, often until after graduation.

Key findings:

  • Employers continue to invest heavily in graduate recruitment promotion and processes:
    – Employers are spending more time on campus to attract the right students. The number of presentations given by employers has risen this year.
    – The use of online application systems has risen relentlessly over the last four years, but this year the growth has flattened out.

  • In most sectors, actual vacancies have either fallen only slightly or remained the same. The engineering sector reports an increase in vacancies.

  • Despite the high priority given to work experience by government, employers are offering fewer opportunities this year.

  • In the IT, built environment and property sectors there has been an increase in applications but all other sectors report a lower number of applications.

  • Salaries hold steady this year but there has been a general increase in the benefits packages offered to new graduates.

  • Students with IT and engineering degrees are much more attractive to employers this year.
