Buddy System definition
In common parlance, the buddy system is a method of increasing the efficiency of two individuals by pairing them together as a single unit. The system is used for two main reasons. Buddying is used in dangerous situations, such as rock climbing, where it is designed to ensure an extra layer of awareness to increase safety. In an organisational context, the buddy system is used when a new employee is assigned an experienced buddy who acts a point of contact, a confidante, and an ‘in’ to the rest of the organisation. This allows the onboarding process to occur much more organically and smoothly and, it’s hoped, result in a better long-term outcome for the organisation and the employee.
