Q: Since making a woman an offer of employment we have announced some redundancies and therefore no longer need her. She is due to join us in two weeks time. How do we stand?
A: The woman is not your employee, therefore you do not have to take her into account when carrying out your redundancy exercise.
However, if she has accepted your offer, whether in writing or orally, then you have a legally binding contract of employment with her. You therefore need to give her the notice stipulated in the contract to end it. If this has not yet been agreed, then you should give her a reasonable period of notice (which would be that given to employees in a similar grade as the one for which you were recruiting her).
