HR Tip: Notice definitions

pp_default1

These questions are being answered by Learn HR, a market leader in the provision of HR and payroll training and nationally-recognised professional qualifications.

Question: What is a month’s notice? If I give someone a month’s notice on 15 April does it expire on 15 May, or four weeks later, or on 31 May?

HR Tip: That is up to you. Make this clear when you set out the notice entitlements and requirements in the offer letter, employment contract or statement of particulars. Make it clear to existing employees by means of a notice. Use an appropriate phrase such as ‘one clear calendar month of notice’ or ‘four weeks notice’ or ‘one month of notice to expire at the end of the following month’.
