Q: A debt collection agency has asked for the whereabouts of one of our employees whom we know is notorious for owing money. Where do we stand?
A: Whatever your feelings, you must not reveal this information unless either the employee gives permission – which I suggest you obtain in writing – or the enquirer produces a statutory authority to demand the information. A debt collector would not have this authority whereas a court bailiff might.
