Mayor of London Ken Livingstone has today launched a new documentary Mind the Gap, highlighting the capital’s continuing discrimination and inequality facing women that work in the region.
Companies across London will get the chance to view the film that is being launched alongside Closing the Gap, a brochure showcasing practical examples of companies that have successfully translated recommendations from the Mayor’s annual Women in London Economy reports into positive changes for their staff.
Livingstone said: “As the economic powerhouse of one of the world’s leading economies, London should be at the forefront of modern work practices and cultures. Our research shows that when it comes to gender equality this is not yet the case. The first Women in London Economy report in 2004 revealed a 13 per cent pay gap between men and women in London – four years later research shows that this figure has risen to 23 per cent.”
In a warning to businesses, Livingstone said companies could no longer afford to be ‘complacent’ about workplace equality. “Over the next eight years, seven out of 10 new jobs in the capital will be filled by women. Creating an equal workforce is vital, if all London’s talents are to be harnessed, and it can be done and done successfully.”
