Editor’s note
=============
Inevitably, when a business fails, the finger is pointed at
management failures and lack of leadership. Accounting black holes
and ‘fat cat’ pay allegations will certainly raise the shackles of MG
Rover workers who find themselves jobless, following their employers’
demise.
But when a business goes well and profits are up, you don’t expect
the leader and their style to be under question, that is unless you
are a figure that courts controversy readily.
This week’s Editor’s Comment looks at Gordon Ramsay’s unique approach
to leadership and debates whether he is indeed a ‘hot-head’ or a
‘genius’. Share your views on whether this chef has the right
ingredients for perfect management … or not:

Retirement age: Hewitt’s shameful surrender
/—————————————————————
Retirement has always been a controversial subject. Workers can
be forced out of their jobs, regardless of their competence and
without employer justification. The prime minister talks of the
“opportunity society” at the 2004 Labour Party Conference, a
supposed equal society, free from prejudice in the workplace.
This may take into account race and disabilities but the issue
of age remains forgotten.

Editor’s Comment: Leadership the Ramsay way
——————————————-
A critic once accused chef hot-head, Gordon Ramsay of being capable
of ‘bayoneting the wounded’ and it would be fair to say that
television series including ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ have done much to
reinforce this image; Editor’s Comment finds out what can be learnt
from leadership the ‘Ramsay’ way.

Featured Any Answers question: Employees that lie
=================================================
Q: We have a female employee who, for whatever reason, feels the
need to fib constantly about themselves. These fibs have ranged from
pregnancy to terminally ill parents.
Anyone who shows the person any interest (usually as a result of
sympathy for the fibs!) then becomes a fixation for the individual
(i.e. constantly bombarded with inappropriate text messages, phone
calls etc).
We have tried counselling interviews, but usually more untruths are
given as a consequence.
Where do we go from here and how do I deal with a perpetual attention
seeker?

(Edited comments appear – see the site for full details)
To manage this employee you need to be using a capability policy,
sickness absence policy and/or disciplinary policy to determine
whether this person is fit for the full duties, is capable of doing
the full duties, can’t or won’t do the duties gathering the evidence
accordingly to make a decision as to their future employment.
