The government has launched a scheme to encourage employees to go into state schools on a volunteer basis and talk about their careers in order to inspire the next generation.
The Inspiring the Future initiative was unveiled by the deputy prime minister and such famous faces as entrepreneur Karren Brady, actress Joanna Lumley, radio presenter Margherita Taylor and head chef at The Ivy restaurant, Gary Lee. It is run by the Education and Employers Taskforce, an independent charity.

“Too many young people get the message that the best jobs are not for them,” Nick Clegg said. “Inspiring the Future will give state school students the chance to see, hear and make a connection with someone in a career or job they might not have thought about.”

He continued: “Today we’re calling on doctors, nurses, lawyers, builders, business people, civil servants, farmers, mechanics, engineers and other working people to give up just an hour of their time to talk to students in their local state school about how they got where they are today. The power of making connections that inspire young people is immeasurable and can be life-changing.”

A lot of successful people could point to a moment in their lives when they were inspired to become the people they are today. “Now it’s their turn to help young people fulfil their potential,” he added.

Almost 600 civil servants have so far signed up for the initiative. To help promote the scheme, organisers are encouraging people to tweet about who inspired them to follow their chosen career with the #whoinspiredyou hashtag.

  1. Great Idea!

What a great project. What better way to inspire young people then to bring their inspirations right in front of them and educated them on how to be a success. That type of knowledge is invaluable.
