Prison service staff have rejected a one per cent pay offer voting to take strike action over the issue, at the end of the month.
Almost 500 members of the GMB union working in industrial and agricultural roles providing gas, electricity, cooking and other services in prisons, will take discontinuous action against the Prison Service from 31 August to 2 September.
The pay offer was rejected as “insulting” by GMB national officer Neil Moore.
“The GMB represents the kind of people who keep the nation’s prisons clean, who cook food, who mend the plumbing or the electrics when they go wrong. They sustain these places for the safety of the nation, and they deserve a better pay deal to help sustain themselves and their families,” he said.
The strike comes just months after industrial action against the Prison Service in May. It was the first time that staff had taken action for over a quarter of a century. The strike was called over pay.
