Seven hundred and fifty Swissport employees working at Heathrow had their airside passes removed and were sent home this morning.
The company, which previously described itself as a major force in the global ground and cargo handling business reportedly ceased trading at 5 am today (Tuesday 16 November).
It is rumoured that the firm awaits the appointment of receivers.
Ed Blissett, GMB senior organiser told HRZone he was angered at the lack of warning or consultation by the company over the fate of the workers.
In a turnaround, following a meeting with the firm, Blissett commented:
“Swissport have assured me that the jobs at Stansted and Gatwick are safe and that the company will continue to trade at those locations.”
