Workers in the UK are feeling increasingly secure in their jobs, according to a global survey of 9,785 employees which has identified UK employees as among the most confident in the world.
When asked how they view the possibility of being laid off from their job in the coming year, 21% of a representative group of full-time workers in the UK felt this was very likely, compared to over 29% six months ago.
The Global Career Confidence Index from RightCoutts also found that over a fifth of the same group of workers also reported that it would be somewhat or very easy to find a similar job at the same pay, compared to 18% six months ago.
The UK remains ahead of other countries in Europe in terms of an increase in job confidence. Ireland, Norway, France and Italy have all seen levels of employee confidence increase, whereas confidence has fallen in Germany and Switzerland. Dramatic increases in career confidence have also been seen in the US and Canada.
“Workers in the UK are regaining confidence in the future of their own careers and the turn around in confidence that has been seen in the last six months is impressive,” said Jo Bond, Deputy Managing Director of RightCoutts in the UK.
“There is a downside to this good news for employers as their employees may look to take up the many career opportunities available, increasing staff turnover. Steps that can be taken to avoid this situation include putting in place policies and practices to retain talented individuals and communicating the total benefits of working for the employer internally and externally.”
