With the prospect of increasing job losses following the terrorist attacks in the US, and a possible economic slow-down, trade unionists at unemployed workers’ centres across the country are getting ready for increased demand.
The unemployed workers’ centres provide a range of services including practical help and services such as first education classes, basic skills courses and help with job search and CV services. They also provide advice on welfare benefits, housing, debt, tribunal representation and café and crèche facilities.
John Monks, TUC General Secretary, will speak at the TUC’s conference of unemployed workers’ centres on Thursday 18 October. He will say: ‘We must not talk ourselves into a recession, but at the same time we must be prepared for the worst. Our network of unemployed workers’ centres is a useful safety net that provides advice and services until we can resume the task of creating full employment.’
