Featured question: Mentoring scheme
===================================

Can anyone give me any tips or hints on best practice or pitfalls
in setting up mentoring schemes?
Question submitted by Ceri-Anne Bailey
http://www.hrzone.co.uk/item/70957

I set a scheme up at the request of one our departments. It never
really took off – which I suspected might happen. This was
because they were trying to use it as a solution to the wrong
problem, i.e. ineffective management. Really investigate why
you’re doing it. It also didn’t really work because the mentees
hadn’t cottoned onto the fact that you need to take
responsibility for your own life – they were still expecting
others to do it for them (the external person who did the initial
training identified this very quickly). So you probably need to
consider how motivated the mentees are.
Alic Clayton

Explore local educational schemes re mentoring. Most are based on
recruiting voluntary mentors, often not from within the
establishment or organisation itself. Volunteers are motivated,
create time to fulfil obligations therefore the scheme is more
likely to succeed. CIPD offer a mini-award in mentoring which
provides a good framework for competent practice.
Ian Dodd

————-

The first principle in establishing a scheme is clarity and
ownership of its aims, with an agreed understanding of what
mentoring is. Unless this is clear and realistic, it won’t work!!
In consulting with organisations, this has to be the starting
point. ‘What is your understanding of mentoring and what are you
trying to achieve?’

Q – Any tips on externally marketing training initiatives?
Sue Nunan

A – Gary Homes suggests: Go straight to the influencers and
decision makers in your target market. You will know who these
are based on the topic area of your course and they are most
likely to be in the same industry as yourself… Whatever you do,
play off the back of your company’s brand name as that will open
more doors than anything else.

A – Clive O’Donnell advises: The most cost-effective method, I
believe, is to link your company and training products to a
search engine. If you have an IT department, they will achieve
this in a matter of minutes! A CDROM outlining training promotes
interest. Does your company already have a corporate CDROM? If
so, include training on it. Does your company have a Website? If
so, add a training page – or two.

Q – We are putting together a recruitment and selection course.
we need a game/exercise which help delegates insight gain into
their stereotypes and prejudices, and how these can impact on the
selection process.
Lisa Buisson

A – Phil Knott offers an example: We designed an exercise. We cut
out photos from magazines of people who were either famous, or
who were not what they appeared to be. We had for example Julian
Richer (Richer Sounds) as well as a lady who stole to fund her
drug habit, etc. etc. We of course threw in a few “red herrings”.
We pasted these to cards and supplied other cards with the
person’s description on them as well as additional descriptions
so that there were more descriptions than pictures. We formed the
group into two teams each with a selection of cards. The debate
and the natural inclination to stereotype people was a joy to
watch. It led to some excellent discussion on stereotyping.
