Rise in second jobs

pp_default1

In the last eighteen years the number of people with second jobs has risen by 68 per cent, according to the Office of National Statistics. In the same period the number of people in employment rose 18 per cent.
The number of peole with second jobs has been higher, in the mid-1990s.

Not too surprisingly, people with second jobs generally work part-time in the first one. Variation with rates of earning is interesting: the frequency of second jobs among men working full-time is highest among high earners; for full-time women, its highest among the lowest paid. Generally the group least likely to do a second job are middle-earners.
