School’s out – but dad’s in!

The Government has launched a new initiative to encourage fathers to spend more time with their sons.

The Dads & Sons ‘Give an Hour’ scheme to be launched by Minster for Young People and Learning Stephen Twigg today, aims to encourage companies to support fathers in helping their sons with their education. Electronics retailler Comet has taken up the challenge by offering employees who are fathers one hour’s paid leave in September to spend time on educational activities with their sons.

A new booklet will be launched alongside, providing advice and ideas for fathers on how they can get more involved with their sons’ education, and suggesting joint learning activities and competitions to enter together.

A report published in April 2002 commissioned by the DfES found that 75% of fathers said they would like to be more involved with their sons, but 66% of fathers said that pressures of work stopped them doing being more involved.
